Signing of Exchange of Notes and Grant Agreement For Japanese Grant Project for Improvement of Equipment for Solid Waste Treatment in Local Cities (Phase 2)
- The Government of Japan has decided to extend to the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic a grant assistance totalling up to \ 985 million yen (about US$ 10 million) for the project for Improvement of Equipment for Solid Waste Treatment in Local Cities. H.E Mr. Masaki KUNIEDA, Ambassador of Japan to the Syrian Arab Republic, and H.E Dr. Amer Lutfi, Head of State Planning Commission will sign the Exchange of Notes for the Project at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the State Planning Commission in Damascus.
On the same occasion, the Grant Agreement of the Project will be also signed between H.E Dr. Tamer Al-Hijjah, Minister of Local Administration, and Ms Akiko TOMITA, Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Syria office. - The gist of the project is as follows
(1) Outline of the Project
Under the project, total number of 92 vehicles including Compactors, Medical Waste Truck, Dump Truck, Wheel Loader, Wash Container, Mobile Workshop, Mechanical Sweeper and Sprinkler Truck will be procured and distributed to 15 municipalities of the following governorates: Homs, Hama, Idled, Lattakia, Sweida and Rural Damascus.
The expected date of delivery for the procured equipments is May 2011.
(2) Effectiveness of the Project
Under the Project, the following effects are expected to appear;
a) Enhancing the current situation of the solid waste by increasing the capability of collecting waste and cleaning the roads in the above mentioned municipalities. It will help those municipalities to preserve the cities clean and healthy. In addition, equipments like Wheel Loader would increase the work efficiency at landfills.
b) Securing safe separate collection of medical waste.
(3) The Government of Japan sincerely hopes that the procurement of the vehicles under the grant project will be utilized efficiently to improve the current situation of the solid waste and contribute in preserving the environment in Syria.
